As Pilates has reached celebrity and TikTok status, we find that people of all types are trying and practicing Pilates. With Pilates being over 100 years old, this technique of exercise, breath work, and mind-body training has reached audiences who would never have tried it in the past. However, with this status, qualified, certified, and educated professional Pilates practitioners are hard to find on social media and YouTube. Going to your local Pilates studio with internationally certified, comprehensive trainers is your best bet. It is also interesting to see athletes try Pilates and find it incredibly challenging for their well-tuned bodies. Many athletes use Pilates as a supplemental workout to keep them aligned, strong in their core, and aware of their bodies. But not all of us are athletes, so how can we all relate to and benefit from Pilates? Whether you are an athlete trying to improve your performance in your sport or an older person who just wants to be able to walk without a cane on that next trip, Pilates can help with your needs.
So how can it challenge everyone and help me? Pilates can teach you small, refined movements and techniques to help you, for example, increase your throwing speed through specific back exercises or learning how to lift your foot more efficiently to help you walk better without that cane. Through educating you and teaching you to be aware of your body, Pilates uses control and breathing to help you concentrate on the task at hand through prescribed exercises. This helps improve your nervous system and increase your proprioception, which is your body’s awareness of movement in space (surroundings). The difference between Pilates and other forms of exercise is the challenge to stay focused on the movement, using precision, control, flow, and concentration, all while utilizing the whole body, even when working on one specific area. All of these concepts, while also coordinating your breathing. If that is not a challenge, I am not sure what it could be. It’s a new year, so don’t get stuck in the typical fitness and health spiral. Come see us at Pivot Pilates, and let's start a new challenge together.
