Why you need and Assessment

Whenever you begin a new fitness routine or explore an exercise form you have never tried before, it is often a prudent idea to assess your current physical condition and capabilities. This initial evaluation serves as a crucial foundation for your journey into fitness, particularly with disciplines such as Pilates. Pilates is unique in that it emphasizes not only physical strength but also a deep awareness of posture, alignment, breath control, and functional movements, which we refer to as foundational exercises. These foundational exercises are designed to enhance your overall body awareness and movement efficiency, making it essential to understand your starting point.

To embark on a new Pilates program effectively, we strongly recommend undergoing a comprehensive assessment. But why is this assessment necessary? The answer lies in the fact that you may not be fully aware of the subtle misalignments and dysfunctional movement patterns that have developed over time in your everyday life. These misalignments can stem from various factors, including long hours spent sitting at a desk, repetitive movements in daily tasks, how you sleep at night, or even past injuries that have altered your body's mechanics without your conscious realization.

A qualified Pilates instructor is trained to identify these issues through a detailed analysis of your posture and movement patterns. During the assessment, the instructor will observe your body in front of a grid in all directions, taking note of any asymmetries and restrictions in your range of motion. This professional insight is invaluable, as it can highlight potential problem areas that you may not have noticed. For instance, you might have a tendency to favor one side of your body, leading to muscle imbalances that could hinder your progress in Pilates and other physical activities. This leads into a functional movement assessment where the instructor will look at the movement of your pelvis, shoulder girdle, and spine to determine any other restrictions and dysfunctional movement patterns.

Once these potential issues are identified, the instructor can provide you with tailored recommendations on how to address them within your Pilates program and practice. This personalized approach ensures that you are not only working on building strength and flexibility but also correcting any underlying issues that might impede your progress. By focusing on alignment and functional movement from the outset, you can cultivate a more effective and safer Pilates practice.

So how does this translate into your Pilates sessions? Once the assessment is completed and goals have been determined through discussion and analysis with your instructor, we are able to design and implement an individualized program within your private sessions and group apparatus classes. Each client's file is completed and reviewed by the instructors prior to any session or class. This individualizes the session so that your needs are addressed. Even in classes, we can address these needs.

In summary, starting a new Pilates program without an assessment could mean missing out on critical insights that can enhance your fitness journey. By investing time in understanding your body's current state, you set yourself up for success, allowing for a more informed and effective approach to your practice. This foundational step not only aids in preventing injuries but also individualizes the benefits you will experience as you progress in your Pilates journey.
